One of the most anticipated Nollywood cinema releases of August 2026 just got closer.
Directed by Darlington Obodo Kelechi and distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, Ikenga: The Last Festival opens in cinemas nationwide on Thursday 21st August 2026. The film is set in the peaceful kingdom of Umuani, a community where honour, integrity and sacred tradition organise every aspect of life, and follows one man whose forbidden power threatens to rewrite the ancestral rules that have held that community together for generations.
The cast features Pete Edochie, Nkem Owoh, Patience Ozokwor, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Zubby Michael, Beverly Osu, Jide Kene Achufusi, Destiny Etiko, Ugezu J. Ugezu, and Regina Daniels. Between them, these are names that have defined Nigerian cinema across four decades, from the generation that gave the industry its identity to the generation currently driving its box office. Seeing them in the same frame is not a small thing.
Pete Edochie, Nkem Owoh and Patience Ozokwor are among Nollywood's most recognisable veteran actors and have appeared together in several productions over the years. Their dynamic on screen carries a shorthand that audiences who grew up watching them will respond to immediately. Kanayo O. Kanayo brings a particular kind of menacing authority that very few actors can occupy convincingly. Zubby Michael arrives with one of the most devoted mainstream followings in contemporary Nollywood. The combination of old guard and new guard in a single story about tradition and forbidden power is exactly the kind of casting that a film like this needs to work.
Ikenga: The Last Festival opens on the same day as the musical drama Sweet 16 and in the same month as the historical epic King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos, which arrives on 28th August, making this one of the most stacked Nigerian cinema months in recent years. Three large-cast, tradition-heavy films within weeks of each other says something significant about where Nollywood's appetite currently sits.
