Nigerian filmmaker Ben Cassie has earned international recognition for her feature film IFEDICHE, securing the Best Film by a Female Filmmaker award at the Windsor International Black Film Festival in Ontario, Canada.
The director announced the achievement following the conclusion of the festival, expressing gratitude to the event organisers, her co-director Victor O. Onwudiwe, producer Brown Ene, the Enugu State Government, and the cast and crew who contributed to the production.
Set and filmed against the backdrop of Enugu State, IFEDICHE centers on the life of a university educated young woman who returns to her native village to build a future after experiencing set backs in the city. The narrative explores themes of identity, cultural heritage, self reliance, and the economic realities facing young graduates navigating contemporary Nigerian society.
The production features a cast that combines emerging talents with established industry figures. Chinelo Enemchukwu leads the cast alongside Jide Kene Achufusi and Scarlet Gomez, with veteran actors including Pete Edochie, Chiwetalu Agu, and Ebele Okaro appearing in prominent supporting roles.
The project emerged from a strategic collaborative effort involving the Enugu State chapter of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, receiving institutional backing from the Enugu State Government to highlight local storytellers and showcase the state as a viable hub for film production.
This latest honor at the Windsor International Black Film Festival expands the international footprint of the project, which previously featured across several global platform showcases including the Toronto Nollywood International Film Festival and the Eastern Europe Film Festival.
