Duru passed away at the age of 57 on Friday, 23 October 2026, following a brief illness.

News of his passing was officially confirmed to filmmaker and founder of the Best of Nollywood Awards, Seun Oloketuyi, through formal announcements posted on the late actor's official social media handles, and subsequently corroborated by the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN).

In an official statement released by the State House, President Tinubu described the loss of the respected actor as a painful moment for Nollywood and the nation’s creative community, which has benefited immensely from its pioneers' dedication, talent, and lifelong contributions.

The President acknowledged the pivotal role veteran actors like Duru played in the growth and development of Nigeria’s film industry, particularly in shaping its artistic identity, nurturing emerging talent, and projecting Nigerian stories, culture, and values to audiences both at home and abroad.

"The legacies of artists who devote their lives to entertaining, educating, and inspiring society endure long after their departure," President Tinubu noted, affirming that Duru’s contributions to Nollywood will remain an enduring part of the industry’s rich history and cultural heritage.

President Tinubu offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the departed actor’s soul and asked God to grant his family, friends, colleagues, and admirers the strength and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. Reaffirming his commitment to the creative sector, the President assured the Nigerian creative community that his administration continues to recognise the invaluable contributions of the arts and entertainment industry to national development, cultural preservation, and the country’s global image.
