The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has issued a formal tribute following the sudden passing of veteran actor, director, and industry leader Francis Duru, describing his death as a monumental loss to the nation’s film industry and cultural landscape.
In an official statement released by the management and staff of the board, the regulatory body expressed profound sadness over the demise of the long-standing film icon. The board lauded Duru not merely as a performer, but as a university-trained thespian whose decades-long career exemplified the highest standards of discipline, artistic excellence, and professional integrity.
Highlighting his historic contribution to Nigerian cinema, the NFVCB made special reference to his career-defining breakout role as Ahanna in Amaka Igwe's 1995 classic film Rattlesnake. The board noted that across generations of Nollywood storytelling, Duru consistently championed motion picture content that successfully balanced high aesthetic value with deep societal morality.
"Francis Duru was not merely a performer; he was a trained thespian whose career personified the pinnacle of discipline, artistry, and professional integrity," the statement read. "As a regulatory body committed to the growth and classification of quality films, the NFVCB recognizes Francis Duru as a thoroughbred professional who elevated the craft of acting."
The censors board further acknowledged Duru's administrative contributions to the creative sector, particularly his service to his professional association, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), where he previously served as interim national president. The statement also highlighted his international humanitarian footprint, including his recognition as a United Nations Ambassador of Peace, which underscored his commitment to utilizing his creative platform for social good.
Describing the late actor as a "brilliant cultural ambassador and a rare standard-bearer for quality production," the NFVCB, alongside its parent ministry, extended formal condolences to Duru’s family, the leadership of the AGN, and his global fan base.
