Nollywood is gearing up for one of its more culturally ambitious releases of the year. Alahun: The Weaver, directed by Dare Olaitan and produced by Kayode Kasum, is scheduled for release in August, and from what we know so far, this one is carrying serious weight in terms of story, craft, and the names attached to it.
The film centres around a young protagonist who faces ridicule in a society with rigid ideas of masculinity, where he is told that real men do not weave baskets or plait hair. Defying those norms, he embarks on an extraordinary journey across mystical worlds to save his kingdom. It is the kind of premise that works on multiple levels at once, grounded in Yoruba culture but asking questions that go far beyond any single community.
The movie explores themes of manhood, bravery, and the subversion of traditional gender expectations, and with Dare Olaitan at the helm, that thematic ambition is likely to translate into something visually and narratively compelling. Olaitan has built a reputation for taking bold creative swings, and this project looks like it fits that pattern.
The cast is the kind of ensemble that commands attention on its own. Alahun: The Weaver features Odunlade Adekola, Ibrahim Chatta, Lateef Adedimeji, Moshood Fattah, Kunle Remi, Omowunmi Dada, Faithia Williams, Ronke Oshodi Oke, Tope Tedela, and Peter Fatomilola. Veteran energy and contemporary star power in the same frame, which is exactly what a story like this needs.
The film will be distributed by Genesis Pictures and is coming to cinemas nationwide this August.
